Description
Located on the south shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula approximately 12 miles southeast of Mohawk, Gay was settled in 1904 around the stamp mills of the Mohawk & Wolverine Mining Companies. Population peak was 800 in 1915. The photo shows the Mohawk & Wolverine Stamp Mill.

B.S. Shearer was the Postmaster and superintendent for Mohawk Mining Co.  There was also a general store at this time.  By 1909, the population increased to about 550 and there was a physician. The superintendent for the Wolverine Mining Co. was David Vinton.  By 1915 the population was 800, with a railroad agent residing here now as well.  By 1927 the population decreased to about 600 but there was an addition of a Catholic Church.
