Laurium

Take a step back into time as you explore the historic town of Laurium.

Formally known as Calumet, the town of Laurium was established in 1895 as a company town for mine owners and captains.  Thomas Hoatson built his 13,000 sq. ft. home here which is now part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park and where the famous Notre Dame football player, George Gipp, was born.  George Gipp was quite an athlete, although he never play high school foortball.  He played for the Laurium baseball team and in 1915 they were the Upper Peninsula Baseball Champions with George playing center field.  He then went on to play professional football for Notre Dame.  While playing for defense for Notre Dame.  For four those four years the team  had a great record.  They won 27, lost 2 and tied 3 games. During those four years he was on the team, they scored a total of 520 points while the others scored 97 points.  Laurium is home to the Georgle Gipp Memorial.

Today Laurium is more modern than back in the mining days but you can still feel the history as you pass through.  Restaurants, shops, a bowling alley that was built in 1945 and many homes that are on the National Register of Historic Homes are located here.
