Houghton

Welcome to the birthplace of professional hockey, Michigan Technological University and the gateway to the Keweenaw.

Positioned along the Portage Canal, Houghton was named after Douglass Houghton a geologist and physician who was primarily known for his exploration of the Keweenaw.

The city offers many variations of year-round activities and is home to one of the top engineering collages in the country.  The first professional indoor hockey game was played in Houghton in 1902.  Today you’ll find restaurants and local shops lining the downtown streets and an amazing view of the Portage Lift Bridge and Portage Canal.
