You have officially entered the Keweenaw!

Founded in 1859 by the Quincy Mine Company, Hancock has an interesting history.  The town was named after John Hancock, who signed the Declaration Of Independence. In 1869 there was a fire, caused by a defective stove pipe, that destroyed nearly all of the buildings in the village.  Including stores, churches, residents houses and businesses.  Within a year they were all rebuilt with the exception of  those that belonged to Leopold & Austrian.  They chose not to rebuild.

Hancock and Houghton are sister cities, however they are separated by the Portage Canal and in January of 1875 a two lane toll bridge was built with a middle swing section that would swing out of the way to make room for the boats that needed access to the water way.  The bridge would later be replaced with an Iron bridge 

The downtown historic district now houses local shops, galleries and restaurants while the east side of town showcases many Victorian homes that once belonged to mine captains. Hancock, is the gateway to the Keweenaw Peninsula.  

You will find hiking and biking trails, the world’s largest steam hoist, unique restaurants and quaint boutiques in this historic area.
