The Red Jacket Jamboree is America's NEW old-time radio variety show sharing stories, songs and history from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula (Copper Country) Hosted by Lena Dorey, the show is performed/recorded in front of a live audience at the historic Calumet Theatre in downtown Calumet, Michigan. Two hourlong episodes are recorded per performance for later radio broadcast.
Singer-Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jen Sygit has three solo albums under her belt with her latest release "So Long Pollyanna" named as album of the year by both John Bommarito (107.1 fm Ann Arbor, MI) and The Progressive Torch & Twang (88.9 fm East Lansing, MI). "So Long Pollyanna" was also nominated for two Jammie Awards (WYCE Grand Rapids, MI) including Best Song for "Sugar High" which later won Best Country Song at the Garden State Film Festival in 2014 for its use in the independent film "Buffalo". Her second release "Leaving Marshall St." was nominated for a Detroit Music Award for BEST ACOUSTIC/FOLK ALBUM in 2007 and made it to number 9 on the independent roots music charts that year. In addition to performing as a solo artist, Jen is also a member of the all-female string band Stella!, roots rock band Lincoln County Process and is a sought after back up singer and session vocalist. Now, besides regionally touring and playing shows, Jen also hosts the weekly radio show "Eclecticana" (WLNZ 89.7fm Lansing, MI) and has been commanding the airwaves for six years.
Nicknamed the Storytelling Ranger, Pete Griffin has been sharing his stories with thousands of people. Pete grew up in Cedarville, Michigan before moving to Alaska in 1992. He worked for the US Forest Service as a wildlife biologist and District Ranger until his 2010 retirement. Described as the “Storytelling Ranger” (as well as the "voice of the Tongass"), he's been telling personal stories about life that incorporate natural history, leadership, and learning for years on radio. He's performed in Los Angeles, Richmond VA, Jonesborough TN, on board Disney and Princess cruise ships as Alaskan Naturalist on dozens of Alaskan cruises, and at libraries, schools, and museums between Alaska, Hawaii, and Michigan. Pete is a member of the National Storytelling Network and was selected as one of the Showcase Performers at the 2017 National Storytelling Conference.
The Red Jacket Jamboree, hosted by Lena Dorey, also features humorous sketches performed by the Red Jacket Radio Actors, poetry and musings by Martin Achatz, the Poet Laureate of the U.P. and a wide range of music performed by the Copper Cats, the stage band. The band consists of Jerry Younce on guitar, Bill Carrothers on piano, Harry South on bass and Zach Ott on percussion.
