Long before modern mining, Native Americans were recovering and mining copper here, in what was the first use of metalworking by people in North America and possibly the entire world. By at least 8,000 years ago, a full fledged copper industry existed in the Western Lake Superior region. This presentation will highlight the historic Delaware Copper Mine and its lesser-known but "Best in the U.P." publicly viewable ancient copper pit. Ancient copper artifacts and hammerstones will be on hand for viewing. NOTE: Those attending will also be eligible for tour of the Delaware mine following the presentation
