The Keweenaw County Historical Society (KCHS) will be sponsoring Jazz
Central, a live music concert, on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018 in the ghost town of
Central Mine (located 18 mi. NE of Calumet off US-41, opposite the Gratiot Lake
turnoff). Music starts at 6:00 pm. Performers include: Rob & Jenny Fritz, Peiffer’s
Corner, Gail English, Nathan Jones, and Steve Jones & The Garden City All-Stars
with Dan Furhmann, Bob Hiltunen & Scott McIntosh.
Bring lawn chairs, flashlights and a picnic supper, or purchase sandwiches
provided by Fitzgerald’s Eagle River Inn. The concert is free, but donations are
gratefully encouraged.
The concert will help fund the preservation of the ghost town of Central, the site
of one of Keweenaw’s most profitable copper mines between 1854-1898. Once
home to almost 1300 people, now only 11 buildings remain. The KCHS is slowly
working to preserve the remaining buildings and restore them as historical exhibit
buildings, workshop/classroom space, or rental homes. We invite you to visit
Central, which is open daily from 9:00 - 5:00, and the hiking trails are available at
all times. For more information on Central and other historic sites in the
Keweenaw, visit www.keweenawhistory.org.
