The Copper Country Community Arts Center is pleased to present mixed media sculpture and two dimensional artwork by Royal Oak, Michigan artist, Christine Hagedorn. Christine’s sculpture includes paper, wood, snakeskin, found objects, and string as well as encoded text stamped in copper sheet and written on paper. She “weathers” her materials so they look old and used, simulating the patina of touch, the residue of history. The act of stitching is important in her work.  She says, “I came to it without thinking at all but I believe it is the voices of women.”  The exhibition is a mix of ethereal boat shaped forms and shields as well as two dimensional pieces featuring found objects and “impossible” books.

In her artist statement, Christine says, “I am interested in the spirituality of other cultures, particularly how spiritual belief is imbued with magic and protection.  I have been creating items of spiritual significance for myself and my community. I have made these pieces with thoughts of magic and the spirit of protecting so that our losses can be soothed. So that we can go on to be our best selves.”

Christine Hagedorn earned her MFA in sculpture from Eastern Michigan University and her BFA in printmaking from Wayne State University. Her exhibition will be at the Copper Country Community Arts Center’s  Kerredge Gallery through September 30, 2021. This exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10-6pm and Saturdays 10-2pm.
