Michigan Tech, ranked in the top tier of national universities by U.S. News & World Report, enriches the cultural and recreational life of the Keweenaw.

Foremost are Mt. Ripley ski hill  and our ski trails (both with nighttime skiing), 600 acres of recreational forest, and the 18-hole Portage Lake golf course . The Student Development Complex, open to students and the community, has swimming and diving pools, racquetball courts, fitness center, climbing wall, basketball courts, a running track, the John MacInnes Student Ice Area, and Gates Tennis Center.

 We also enjoy NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey and Division II football, men’s and women’s basketball, track and field, tennis, Nordic skiing, cross-country, and women’s soccer and women's volleyball.

 Michigan Tech traditions include K-Day, an afternoon to enjoy nearby Lake Superior, and the Parade of Nations, where students, faculty, and staff from more than 80 nations celebrate the diversity of the Tech community and sample great food from around the world.

The biggest annual event is Winter Carnival, when students engineer massive snow statues on campus and around Houghton and Hancock. Skits, queen competitions, and zany special events make this a highlight of the Michigan Tech experience. Broomball is the biggest winter game on campus—students slide around on ice rinks chasing a ball toward the net, and you can follow all the action on our webcams.

Michigan Tech is also home to the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts, where nationally and internationally renowned entertainers perform.  Also worth a visit is one of North America’s great mineral museums: the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum, the official mineral museum of Michigan.

Precollege students can experience college life during the summer through the Youth Programs, and they can get a taste of educational and career opportunities.

Keweenaw Trails Services is a non-profit corporation whose main purpose is to acquire, build and maintain snowmobile and recreational trails in Houghton & Keweenaw counties and to obtain financing and grants for those purposes. Keweenaw Trails Services is the main grant holder for the Department of Natural Resources snowmobile trail grant and is responsible for the grooming, maintenance and upkeep of the 233 miles of snowmobile trails between Toivola and the tip of the Keweenaw peninsula. The KTS is also working closely with the local ATV club to acquire trails for year-round usage.

The board of Keweenaw Trails Services is made up of 10 local business owners, a majority of whom are transient facility owners, who are appointed to serve one year terms.
