Maasto Hiihto/Churning Rapids
Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids in Hancock offer groomed trails for classic skiing, snowshoeing, and snow biking. Trail users may purchase a daily pass for $5 or an annual membership for $60 per family, $40 per individual. Passes may be paid for in the RED donation pipe at the Chalet or Tomasi Road trailheads. Pets are welcome on all groomed and backcountry trails; pick up messes left on the groomed trail. Please – no skate skiing or walking. Snowshoers and snow bikers, please avoid the tracks set for the skiers and do purchase a pass.
These two systems contain about 25k of groomed trails. Two trailheads provide access to Maasto Hiihto. One is at the Four Seasons Chalet, located at fairgrounds, behind the Houghton County Arena. The chalet is open during the day, providing a community room, restrooms, and waxing bench; at the trail head you’ll find the donation pipe, information kiosk, and free map/membership fliers. The other trailhead is at Tomasi Road near the Hancock city garage, north of UP Health System - Portage. Here you’ll find a donation pipe, information kiosk, free map/membership application fliers, and a porta-potty. Churning Rapids can be accessed from Maasto Hiihto or from a trailhead at Christianson Road at M-203. This trailhead has a plowed parking area, a small sign and map, and a porta-potty.
