The Weather Channel

THE WEATHER CHANNEL® PROVES HANCOCK, MI TO BE THE “THIRD SNOWIEST CITY IN AMERICA”

December 20 – The Weather Channel® released its list of America’s Top 10 Snowiest Cities, and Hancock, Michigan ranked third! Jonathan Erdman, Editorial Meteorologist for The Weather Channel®, described the decision process on his weather.com blog. “We examined 30-year average annual snowfall data and limited the list to cities with populations of at least 1,000,” writes Erdman.

Hancock City Manager Glenn Anderson is thrilled with the “3rd Snowiest City” designation and believes the listing is well-deserved recognition. “Obviously we are excited by The Weather Channel’s findings, which came to us by surprise. We had no idea they were conducting this research.” Anderson added, “This designation is important to the entire area as we can use it in many types of promotions.”

Hancock statistics from The Weather Channel include an average annual snowfall of 218 inches, with January being the snowiest month at an average 68.4 inches. The snowiest single day in Hancock was recorded on January 18, 1996, with a total snowfall of 26.5 inches.

Snow enthusiasts here enjoy an abundance of winter recreation in and around the Keweenaw Peninsula. Mont Ripley Ski Hill, less than a mile from Downtown Hancock, offers exciting downhill skiing and snowboarding for people of all ages and abilities. “I’ve operated ski hills in the Upper Peninsula for 30 years. When we tell visitors we get ‘over 250 inches’ of snow a year, they don’t believe me. In fact, most often they discount it as an exaggeration. Now we can back this up with The Weather Channel research!” comments Mont Ripley General Manager Nick Sirdenis. “The Weather Channel designation is great for the promotion of the ski hill and tourism for the area.”

For those who yearn to explore deep snow out their back doors, snowshoeing provides a peaceful, energizing activity for any age. Cross-country and skijor aficionados appreciate Hancock’s beautiful, well-groomed trail systems.

These densely wooded trail systems are right outside the back door of Evert’s Motor Sports in Downtown Hancock. They serve the winter thrill-seeking snowmobiler with sled rentals. Evert’s customer Bob Platt of downstate Wyandotte, has made snowmobiling an annual tradition.

“We were introduced to the Keweenaw Peninsula by friends several years ago. When they talked about the area and how much snow fell here, we figured they were pulling our leg. But, they were right-on. And the snow has brought us here every year since!”

Hancock is situated halfway up the Keweenaw Peninsula and is close to many more winter sporting venues such as Mt. Bohemia, a triple-black-diamond ski hill near Copper Harbor. Over 100km of world-class cross-country ski trails are within ten miles of Downtown Hancock. Swedetown Ski Trails in Calumet offer more than 30km of groomed ski and snowshoe trails, including 5km of trails that are lit until 10 p.m. every night. There is snowy adventure in every corner of the Keweenaw Peninsula and a world of things to do and see for visitors of all ages.

Hancock is home to several celebrated winter traditions, including the annual week-long Heikinpäivä Finnish winter festival held each January. Activities include dancing, bread-making workshops, musical performances, farmers market, reindeer parade, boot-throwing and wife-carrying contests, and the ever-popular Polar Bear Plunge into the icy waters of Portage Lake.

With so many winter activities to enjoy, residents and visitors alike don their woolen wear and thermal winter gear in true Yooper style to make the best of a snowy day. Amazed by the hardiness of folks in the Keweenaw, The Weather Channel’s Erdman declares, “There’s something to be said for a place east of the Rockies that not only endures long, harsh winters but, in some ways, celebrates them!” Hancock Mayor William Laitila agrees. “Our snowy weather entices the community to get outdoors and engage in healthy winter activities. With the ‘third snowiest city’ designation, we hope to see even more people out enjoying our winter weather.”

For information on more winter fun, like the annual Barnelopet cross-country ski races, check the city’s website: www.cityofhancock.com. Area events and activities can also be found on Michigan’s Top of the World website: www.keweenaw.info.
