George Gipp Memorial

George Gipp, Notre Dame's first All-American football player, was born in Laurium in 1895. He died at the age of 25 after a 4-year, 32 game collegiate career in which he scored 83 touchdowns. His deathbed "Win one for the Gipper" speech was made famous by Ronald Reagan in "The Knute Rockne Story". George's home is featured on the Keweenaw National Historical Park's Historical Residential District Walking Tour.

The George Gipp Memorial Park was dedicated on August 3, 1935 and rebuilt in the late 1990's. George is buried in the local Lakeview Cemetery on M-203 west of Calumet in Section 20, Lot 70.
