Portage Lake cuts across the Keweenaw Peninsula and offers entry into the waters of Lake Superior on both ends. It is one of the premier fishing and boating lakes in the area.
Northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, perch, crappie, sturgeon and punkinseed lure fisherman. Public boat launch sites are available along the lake at Chassell (along US-41), the Hancock Boating & Recreation area (on M-203), the Houghton County Marina (on M-26) and Lily Pond (on M-203).Camping and swimming are available at several campgrounds along the lake: the Hancock City Camping Facility, McLain State Park, the City of Houghton RV Park and the North Canal Township Park. Lodging, dining, shopping, gas and other services are available in Houghton & Hancock.
