National Parks

This national park, in conjunction with 19 Heritage Sites, commemorates the heritage of copper mining on the Keweenaw Peninsula - its mines, its machinery and its people. The Calumet Visitors Center in the historic Union Building on Red Jacket Road is open to the public year round and is free to all individuals and groups and includes two floors of fully accessible interpretive exhibits.  Self-guided walking tour maps of the Calumet Industrial Core (Calumet & Hecla Mining Company properties with wayside signs), the Historic Calumet Business District (the historic commercial buildings) and the Historic Laurium Residential District (the area's historic homes) are available. From late June through August the park offers the following Ranger Programs: CALUMET WALKING TOUR - Explore the former Calumet & Hecla Copper Mining Company's industrial area and downtown Calumet's historic business district. 2 hours, 1.5 miles, easy terrain. The CALUMET CHILDREN'S PROGRAM - learning about history can be fun! Children ages 8 - 12 can join a ranger for a program filled with engaging activities. All children should wear sturdy shoes and bring water to drink. One hour and .5 miles.
